The Socio-Economic Can Opener

The use of Assume a Can Opener in US debate over affirmative action.

In *Illiberal Education*, Dinesh D'Souza advocated that race-based affirmative action be replaced with affirmative action based on socioeconomic status, adjusted to weed out those who don't have sufficient "learning and growth potential."

That last is necessary because people would rightly wonder whether his plan would just replace one cohort of people unprepared to succeed in college with another, the only difference being the skin color of the people flunking out.

He simply decrees that measuring "learning and growth potential" will be easy with financial aid data colleges already collect.
